Summary

'A refreshingly honest reminder of what the path to business success really looks like 。。。It's an amazing tale' Bill Gates 'The best book I read last year was Shoe Dog, by Nike's Phil Knight。 Phil is a very wise, intelligent and competitive fellow who is also a gifted storyteller' Warren Buffett In 1962, fresh out of business school, Phil Knight borrowed $50 from his father and created a company with a simple mission: import high-quality, low-cost athletic shoes from Japan。 Selling the shoes from the boot of his Plymouth, Knight grossed $8000 in his first year。 Today, Nike's annual sales top $30 billion。 In an age of start-ups, Nike is the ne plus ultra of all start-ups, and the swoosh has become a revolutionary, globe-spanning icon, one of the most ubiquitous and recognisable symbols in the world today。 But Knight, the man behind the swoosh, has always remained a mystery。 Now, for the first time, he tells his story。 Candid, humble, wry and gutsy, he begins with his crossroads moment when at 24 he decided to start his own business。 He details the many risks and daunting setbacks that stood between him and his dream - along with his early triumphs。 Above all, he recalls how his first band of partners and employees soon became a tight-knit band of brothers。 Together, harnessing the transcendent power of a shared mission, and a deep belief in the spirit of sport, they built a brand that changed everything。 A memoir rich with insight, humour and hard-won wisdom, this book is also studded with lessons - about building something from scratch, overcoming adversity, and ultimately leaving your mark on the world。

I didn’t know much about Phil Knight before reading this。 It was an interesting book。 He seems to excuse some transgressions as for his vision & bringing forth his creation。 Clearly he is an amazing business man, I’m just not sure what truly motivated him? Was it his need to be a cultural phenomenon or was it to provide a basic need with a high quality product? Either way very well written book & I always love an underdog story。

Amazing book, it's astounding to read how clearly Phil is able to deliver the Nike story with such an ease。 Amazing book, it's astounding to read how clearly Phil is able to deliver the Nike story with such an ease。 。。。more

Wow, this was much better than I expected。 Of course I knew Nike was a big shoe and clothing company but I did not know that they took a very different route from the traditional corporate path to success。 Phil Knight is a self deprecating “real” guy who created something huge with a band of smart misfits and some real goals to improve the world。 Highly recommended!

Phil Knight is a gifted story-teller。 Reading the story of his journey to build a brand that the world knows over in NIKE was fantastic。 So many takeaways you can get from this book, but one that stood out throughout the entire read was, "Sometimes you have to give up。 Sometimes knowing when to give up, when to try something else, is genius。 Giving up doesn't mean stopping。 DON'T EVER STOP。"The man never gave up on his dream to provide the best, quality shoes and apparel to the world。 This is th Phil Knight is a gifted story-teller。 Reading the story of his journey to build a brand that the world knows over in NIKE was fantastic。 So many takeaways you can get from this book, but one that stood out throughout the entire read was, "Sometimes you have to give up。 Sometimes knowing when to give up, when to try something else, is genius。 Giving up doesn't mean stopping。 DON'T EVER STOP。"The man never gave up on his dream to provide the best, quality shoes and apparel to the world。 This is the perfect read for entrepreneurs and those in business whom are just starting out。 It is the perfect motivator。 。。。more

Good one, as far as business leader autobiographies go。 Knight can write really well, succeeds in creating a facsimile atmosphere in the mind of the reader of whatever he had to endure as he went through his journey of creating one of the world's strongest brands。 Good one, as far as business leader autobiographies go。 Knight can write really well, succeeds in creating a facsimile atmosphere in the mind of the reader of whatever he had to endure as he went through his journey of creating one of the world's strongest brands。 。。。more

Loved it。 Just wished there was illustrations of the shoe designs , more real time photos , a name and role of all the characters in play。

Very interesting account of how a business is developed。 In parts, it can become more business oriented but there is a sincere effort to make it more accessible to the general readers and not just those looking to start their own ventures。 The flow of the book is quite nice。 It is a good read!

A wonderful book to read if you are a passionate sportsman and want to do something beautiful in life。 It explains an entrepreneurship journey, and the ups, and downs associated with it。 The financial issues, the setbacks, the fear of continuing, everything is wisdom in this book。There is a lot of knowledge you will acquire about shoes, venture marketing, global connection of shoes and things like that。Please go ahead and read this one。

I had expected it to be something like Steve Jobs's biography, but it's more like Nike's legal issues。 I had expected it to be something like Steve Jobs's biography, but it's more like Nike's legal issues。 。。。more

The Book is highly motivating and will teach you the power of perseverance better than any self help book on the same subject。

I find a lot of autobiographies and memoirs written in self adulation。 This one ended up being different。The critical tone, down to earth and plain narration of triumphs and trials make this book an honest memoir。 Loved how the passion for sports, hard work, grit, persistence and so many strokes of luck formed a long lasting company。

One of the best books I’ve ever read! Phil Knight was a bit of a dickhead, at times, in this book, but he was also a hardworking visionary。 Not only does this book teach you about business, it teaches you what to do, and not do when interacting with humans in a business setting。 Especially, in Japan, but also, China, as well as, other countries。 And, it’s entertaining! An inspiring book that gives not only motivation but also "advices" to me as a person who is a bit off track on the road of exploring about life。 Moreover, the book showcases a powerful brain that significantly contributes to the success of an empire, thus, Phil Knight has placed such a great figure who assists me in taking the first steps into this chaotic world of business。 An inspiring book that gives not only motivation but also "advices" to me as a person who is a bit off track on the road of exploring about life。 Moreover, the book showcases a powerful brain that significantly contributes to the success of an empire, thus, Phil Knight has placed such a great figure who assists me in taking the first steps into this chaotic world of business。 。。。more

How am I just now reading this book? It's got running, it's got shoes, it's got two of my favorite things in it! And Knight tells this story in a very measured tone and deliberate pace, in other words, painfully slowly。 It's certainly an interesting tale and it's chock full of details on the early making of Nike, but I didn't find it particularly inspiring。 Knight is so monotone in his approach that the passion behind Nike is completely absent。 This book read more like a timeline than a memoir。 How am I just now reading this book? Truthful and honest, Phil’s first hand account gave deep insights into the considerations, decisions and sacrifices an entrepreneur has to make during the course of their journey。

A bit slow and laborious in the middle。 And then kind of abruptly ends。 Generally easy to read though。

I cannot find any reason to give this book less than 5 stars, even though I am not a fan of Nike gear。

One of my favorite books of all time。 Phil Knights entrepreneurial story of founding Nike is an inspiration to all of us。

Inspiring and gripping。 Even though I have gotten sympathy for Knight and he ends on a few reflective notes。 I can not seem to overlook the fact that his "Nike against the world" seems to be a bit over dramatic given his background, network and ressources。 I would never take the chances he took so I should not be one to judge but it still rings a bit hollow to modern ears。 I am happy that the spirit takes up so much time and I like to believe that they are not squandering their huge influence an Inspiring and gripping。 Even though I have gotten sympathy for Knight and he ends on a few reflective notes。 I can not seem to overlook the fact that his "Nike against the world" seems to be a bit over dramatic given his background, network and ressources。 I would never take the chances he took so I should not be one to judge but it still rings a bit hollow to modern ears。 I am happy that the spirit takes up so much time and I like to believe that they are not squandering their huge influence and position。 。。。more
